The Wide and Varied Lyrics and Music From the 90s

The music from the 90s can be described by one word: diverse. Earlier parts of the decade saw the success of bands like Nirvana with their vague but catchy anthem for the youth, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' At the end of the 90s, people saw the popularity of boy bands and girl bands, their songs with lyrics reeking of cheesy romantic sentiments (and the occasional lyrics containing sincere intentions for empowerment, like the songs of The Spice Girls). If the 1980s was a decade of innovation, the 90s was a decade of diversity. Surely, this decade has songs and lyrics that can appeal to anyone and everyone, regardless of their taste and their reference.

The commonly acknowledged anthem of the 1990s is, not surprisingly, Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' But while the lyrics of this successful song are somewhat vague, this song catapulted Kurt Cobain as the decade's most famed lyrists (or someone who writes lyrics) and composer (or those who composes lyrics). Thanks to Nirvana, grunge became a mainstream musical genre. They also paved the way for bands like Pearl Jam.

Pearl Jam also became one of the major bands during the 90s. Their song 'Jeremy' is now considered a contemporary classic. The lyrics and the music of this song were inspired by an article by an article Eddie Vedder read, about a high school student killing himself in front of his classmates. The lyrics of 'Jeremy' can illustrate how successful a grunge song can be when done correctly. Unlike the lyrics of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' the lyrics of 'Jeremy' isn't as vague. Consider this part of the lyrics: 'Jeremy spoke in class today / Clearly I remember /Pickin' on the boy / Seemed a harmless little' / But we unleashed a lion.' The lyrics when read completely read like a narrative rather than senseless ramblings, which is typical of some grunge songs.

But pop also emerged during this decade'and it emerged in different types and forms. This was the time when boy bands and girl bands became popular again'a popularity that would transcend even until the following decade. The lyrics of these songs can be considered as bubblegum and syrupy, with the intention of appealing to the younger population with its accessible lyrics. Yet, at its best, the lyrics of songs by these pop artists can achieve what the best songs of any decade can achieve.

Other notable artists during this title include Alanis Morisette and Eminem. Not surprisingly, both wrote the lyrics and the music for their songs'and the lyrics are often considered as some of the best written during this time. Morisette, for instance, writes lyrics that are really relatable; but they do not take the easy way out by using clich's. The lyrics of Eminem, for instance, are controversial and potentially offensive, but they reflect societal truths that no other rapper can emulate.

From divas to rapper, from rock bands to boy bands, from grunge to pop'the 90s certainly has been the most exciting periods of music as it had more or less everything!

The artists which are truly talented, write their own lyrics, and when they do that the outcome is even better, read more at http://www.welovelyrics.com
